What to Do After a Fire

Call Burg’s immediately to have our Disaster Response Team come board-up and secure your property. Your insurance company requires that you take immediate action to initiate mitigation efforts to your home.

Contact your insurance company to verify and explain your coverage. We will provide an overall damage assessment to you and your insurance company.

Once authorized to begin recovery efforts, we will open all windows and doors to vent the property of any remaining smoke and begin the drying process.

It’s important to wait to turn electricity back on until your property has been inspected and cleared by a professional.

You should not disturb the scene by moving any items. A full investigation will need to be performed by your insurance company and the local fire department first.

Avoid additional damage to walls, ceilings or other absorbent surfaces by refraining from trying to clean, wipe or wash fire residue.

Types of Soot

Once we arrive at a fire scene, a Burg’s specialist will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred on the property. Any and all cleaning procedures will be based on the information identified during pre-inspection.

Wet Smoke Residues

These residues result from smoldering fires with low heat. Residues are usually sticky, smeary and give off pungent odors.

Dry Smoke Residues

These residues result from fast burning fires at high temperatures. They are often dry, powdery and small, while not very smeary particles.

Protein Residues

These residues are virtually invisible, although they discolor paints and varnishes and give off an extremely pungent odor.

Fuel Oil Soot

Furnace puff back is a messy and potentially dangerous event in which smoke and soot are released into the furnace. Puff backs often result in oily black “webs” of soot being distributed throughout the house.

Other Types of Residue

These include tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residues that will also need to be cleaned up.

Inspection & Pre-testing

Our team will thoroughly perform tests of the scene while inspecting the property to determine the extent of the damages. At this point, we can establish the scope of cleaning, restoration, and repairs needed for a full recovery.

Identifying the Full Extent of Damages

These are just a few of the decisions that must be made.

  • How many materials are affected by smoke or fire?
  • What is the proper method for cleaning?
  • Will your personal belongings need to be relocated while your house is restored?

Protecting Unaffected Areas

It can be vital to protect areas that were not affected by soot and odor before the damage spreads to these areas. It will save you money in the long run!

Restore or Replace?

We will need to determine what can be restored and what needs to be replaced. This is where pre-testing is vital.

  • Are the smoke residues cleanable?
  • If so, how long will it take to process?
  • Is it cost effective to restore as opposed to replace?

If an unfortunate event happens,

Burg’s has you covered.
